What Have The Two Teams Done Recently?
England
ODIs haven’t quite been very high on England’s priority list in recent times and that can be seen from the fact that we are in the ninth month of 2024 and they haven’t played a game!
That’s right, England’s last ODI came late in 2023 as a part of an ODI series against West Indies. They had lost that 2-1 to the home team, which had been preceded by a horrible performance in the 2023 World Cup in which they had managed to win just four of the nine games they had played.
Australia
While Australia also haven’t played a lot of ODI in recent times, their form in this format has been in sharp contrast to their opponent’s.
They are coming off a 3-0 series win over West Indies which came in February at home and that had followed their World Cup 2023 victory, in which they had won nine in a row. That makes it 12 victories on the trot for Australia coming into this encounter.
Quick England v Australia 1st ODI Preview
As alluded to earlier, ODIs have been on the back-burner for these two sides and that’s to do with the amount of T20I cricket that has been played in recent times, other than the number of Tests that England have played this year.
That being said, the two teams which will go head to head in this game will have a lot of new flavour.
England are being led by Harry Brook following Jos Buttler’s inability to recover from his injury issues. They will also have the likes of Jordan Cox, Jacob Bethell, John Turner and Saqib Mahmood who are either new to the line-up or are coming back after a while.
On the other hand, Australia have been struck by a slew of fast bowling injuries.
Xavier Bartlett, Nathan Ellis, Spencer Johnson and Riley Meredith have all been ruled out because of fitness concerns and Australia have had to bring in Mahli Beardman as a reserve seamer if things go even more wrong.
And the bowlers will be needed at Trent Bridge, which is one of the higher scoring grounds in the country. Expecting a 340+ score here.
