What Have The Two Teams Done Recently?
England
ODIs haven’t quite been very high on England’s priority list in recent times and that can be seen from the fact that we are in the ninth month of 2024 and they hadn’t played a game before the start of this series!
That’s right, before the start of this series, England’s last ODI came late in 2023 as a part of an ODI series against West Indies. They had lost that 2-1 to the home team, which had been preceded by a horrible performance in the 2023 World Cup in which they had managed to win just four of the nine games they had played.
In the first game here, they managed to scramble to a 300+ score but against an Aussie bowling side which was missing a few of its stars they would have expected to do a lot more. In the end, they lost quite easily.
This was followed by an improved performance with the ball in the second game but an ensuing batting collapse meant they are now 2-0 down coming into this game.
Australia
While Australia also haven’t played a lot of ODI in recent times, their form in this format has been in sharp contrast to their opponent’s.
They came into this series following a 3-0 series win over West Indies which came in February at home and that had followed their World Cup 2023 victory, in which they had won nine in a row. That made it 12 victories on the trot for Australia coming into this encounter.
A 13th win followed in the first ODI of this series before they made it 2-0 by winning at Leeds to mark a 14th straight victory in ODI cricket.
Quick England v Australia 3rd ODI Preview
Life in ODI cricket continues to remain a concern for England who have now lost seven matches in a row to Australia.
While this isn’t the same England team that had won the 2019 World Cup with many of the players out because of injuries and retirements, their performances would have left the fans in a bit of a turmoil.
Brendon McCullum has taken over as the new coach, sure, and will take some time to get the house in order but in the meantime there is a reasonable worry that even when not at their best, Australia could run away with this series.
In fact a 5-0 scoreline looms large and if England need to change things they will need to be at their opposition through the entire duration of the game.
Take the case of what happened in the second ODI where England had Australia on the mat at 216 for eight and 221 for nine. And yet Alex Carey blasted 74 off 67 to take them to 270.
In response England failed to make any headway and were bowled out cheaply.
