What Have The Two Teams Done Recently?
England
ODIs haven’t quite been very high on England’s priority list in recent times and that can be seen from the fact that we were in the ninth month of 2024 and they hadn’t played a game before the start of this series.
England’s last ODI came late in 2023 as a part of an ODI series against West Indies. They had lost that 2-1 to the home team, which had been preceded by a horrible performance in the 2023 World Cup in which they had managed to win just four of the nine games they had played.
In this series, they fell 2-0 down and the manner in which they were going, it looked like it could all be over quickly.
Harry Brook has turned his side’s fortunes around though with back to back performances to remember and brought them alive to the final game of the series.
Australia
While Australia also hadn’t played a lot of ODI in recent times, their form in this format had been in sharp contrast to their opponent’s.
They had off a 3-0 series win over West Indies which came in February at home and that had followed their World Cup 2023 victory, in which they had won nine in a row.
And by winning the first two matches here, it was 14 victories on the trot for Australia coming into the third ODI.
England then stalled that run with back to back wins and all of a sudden, it’s Australia who need to come up with some answers.
Quick England v Australia 5th ODI Preview
When Alex Carey rescued Australia from a difficult situation in the second ODI and Australia went on to win that game, not too many would have expected the series to be still alive coming into the fifth game.
It’s not alive, it’s alive and kicking and suddenly there’s not much to choose between the two teams with the bookmakers offering 4/5 for an Australian victory and 21/20 for an English win.
This has come about thanks to the thrill-a-minute batting of Harry Brook who hit an unbeaten 110 in the third game and followed that up with a 58-ball 87 in the fourth.
What made things worse for Australia in that previous game is that in response to England’s 312/5 in 39 overs, Australia had gotten off to the kind of start they needed, scoring 68/0 in 8.3 overs.
Once Travis Head fell though, the rest of the side folded for a mere 126 all out, with Matthew Potts grabbing four and Jofra Archer showing the kind of steam that had made him one of the best in the world.
Australia will need to come up new plans here.
