What Have The Two Teams Done So Far?
England kick-start the T20 World Cup this year as the defending champions, having also made the final in 2016 and won it in 2010 the last time it was held in the West Indies.
They will want to shrug off a poor showing at the 2023 ODI World Cup in which they were knocked out early despite being the defending champions there too.
Scotland were one of the first teams outside of the Full Member nations to qualify for the T20 World Cup, having done that in 2007. Since then they have played in three more editions including the 2021 one where they won all their first round matches (against Bangladesh, Oman and PNG) to make the Super 12 stage.
Last time, in 2022, Scotland were sent out in the first round itself, losing two of their three games.
Quick ENG vs SCO Preview
With a shoddy showing at the 50-over World Cup under their belt, England look to have taken this tournament a lot more seriously. This was evident when captain Jos Buttler along with all of the other England players left the IPL 2024 earlier than usual to focus on their preps for this competition.
While England would be slightly frustrated because of how things went in their T20I series against Pakistan in the lead-up to this tournament, they looked convincing enough in their 2-0 drubbing of their opposition there.
England will welcome the return of Jofra Archer to their line-up, and with Mark Wood back to full fitness as well they have the bowling that can take down some of the best in the world.
What needs to be examined closely is the England batting for conditions which might have shown to be difficult for the batters. Can the hard-hitting Buttler, Phil Salt, Harry Brook and co. adapt their game at a ground where Oman and Namibia were involved in a very low-scoring tie?
Scotland enter this tournament having qualified through the Europe Qualifier’s Regional Final. They played six matches and won all six, including an eight-run win over Ireland who were the other team to make it through.
Captain Richie Berrington and Oli Hairs topped the run-scoring charts in that tournament while left-arm pacer Brad Curie was the best bowler of the competition.
Hairs, incidentally, scored his 248 runs at a whopping strike-rate of 215 but the big question is if he will be able to take that step up while also adapting to these pitches.
