What Have The Two Teams Done Recently?
India
India were the team to beat when it comes to home Tests.
They had entered this series after a 2-0 rout of Bangladesh before this, a result that was possible thanks to a brilliant batting approach from them in a game that was washed out for nearly three days.
Before that, they defeated England at home, winning 4-1, giving them the top spot on the WTC points table as a result of that.
However, they have been out-thought and out-batted and bowled in this series. In the first Test of this series, they were bowled out for 46 in the first innings and crashed to an eight-wicket defeat while in the second Test, Mitchell Santner ran rings around them to help New Zealand grab a facile victory.
New Zealand
New Zealand’s recent form in Test match cricket had been anything but extraordinary.
They were held to a 1-1 draw in Bangladesh late last year and while they defeated a South African C team at home, New Zealand have lost four successive Tests since then – two to Australia and two to Sri Lanka.
A Test against Afghanistan was completed washed out and when the entire opening day’s cricket got washed out in Bangalore, it looked like New Zealand were in for a watery welcome to another game.
They came back in a marvellous manner to crack home a rare away win against India in Bangalore but nobody could have been prepared for what followed at Pune where they out-spun India to become the first team to win a series in the country in 12 years.
India vs New Zealand Head-to-Head Stats
- Overall India vs New Zealand Test Head-to-Head: Overall there have been 64 Tests played between these two teams and India leads New Zealand 22-15.
- At home, however, India have won 17 and lost just four matches. Before their defeat in Bangalore in the opening game of this series and then at Pune in the second Test, New Zealand had last won a Test in India in 1988 at the Wankhede Stadium.
- Since that defeat in Mumbai, India had won 10 and drawn nine Tests at home against the Black Caps before losing in Bangalore and Pune.
India vs New Zealand 3rd Test Preview & Predictions with Latest Odds*
We had mentioned in our preview to the previous Test that it’s not often that India had lost two successive Tests at home and that’s exactly what happened when the hosts fell to a stunning defeat in Pune too.
While in the first Test, the loss was down to their inability to handle seam bowling in the first innings, it was their struggles against spin that came to the fore in the second Test.
And what made things worse is that their own spinners looked like they were struggling to make things happen, the collapses just didn’t materialise and the target was way beyond their reach despite Yashasvi Jaiswal’s knock.
The series might have been lost but for one, India wouldn’t want to be clean swept and more vitally, they know there are WTC points on offer here.
