What Have The Two Teams Done Recently?
South Africa enter this third and final ODI having won both the first two games easily.
Ireland
Before the start of this series, Ireland had played only two ODIs this year and lost both, to Afghanistan. Losses by 35 runs and 117 runs are heavy ones and that’s something that Ireland would look to turn around here.
In the first game here, they looked to have begun well when they reduced South Africa to 39 for three but went on to lose the game by 139 runs.
South Africa
South Africa have one of the best records in ODI cricket among all the teams with a win-loss ratio of over 1.7. More recently, however, they have had their struggles, having lost an ODI series to Afghanistan 2-1.
They looked to have overturned some of those woes by clinching the opener here with some ease, defeating Ireland by a whopping 139 runs.
Quick Ireland vs South Africa 3rd ODI Preview
South Africa have been rampaging in their approach and the results from the Afghanistan series have been left way behind.
Having lost successive ODIs to Afghanistan, they then went on to go down to Ireland in a T20I just before this series and serious questions had started to be asked off them.
The good news for South Africa is those will be quelled for now what with these back to back crushing wins, having beaten Ireland by 139 runs and 174 runs respectively. And just as we had pointed out in our preview to the second game, Ireland need to bat a lot better.
What is worth mentioning is their bowling looked to have fallen off the rails too as Tristan Stubbs and co. tore into it and stole 343 runs off it.
It looks highly likely though that we could see a repeat of the same result and by similar margins come the third ODI too.
Ireland vs South Africa Head-to-Head Stats
- Overall Ireland vs South Africa ODI Head-to-head: There have been eight ODIs played between these two sides before this and South Africa lead 8-1 on head to head. (updated till the end of the second ODI)
- This includes the opening two games of this series in which South Africa were miles ahead of their opponents in terms of quality.
- South Africa had won their first five matches against Ireland before losing one at Malahide in 2021. An Andy Balbirnie century had helped Ireland to 290/5 in their 50 overs in that game before the bowlers combined rather well to restrict that Temba Bavuma-led team to 247.
- That game was followed by a 70-run win for South Africa in the next game, which was the last time they faced off before this series.
