Sri Lanka vs New Zealand 2nd Test Updates
End of Day 2
After Dinesh Chandimal hit a 100 on day one, it was the turn of Kamindu Mendis and Kusal Mendis to add to their own tally of centuries as Sri Lanka ended their first innings at 602 for five. And an exhausted Kiwi side then lost both their openers to slump to 22 for two by the time play had ended.
What that means is that unless New Zealand can find a way to pull off a fighting first innings score, this game could be headed just one way.
Sri Lanka are 2/13 (with Dafabet) to win this from here while a draw is at 17/4 (with 1xbet), which could be a tempting bet if New Zealand can get through a session unscathed.
What I would do is see out the first session of play and take the aggressive call for a drawn game if New Zealand don’t lose more than a wicket.
End of Day 1
Sri Lanka piled on the misery on the New Zealand bowlers as they ended the first day’s play at 306 for three thanks to a Dinesh Chandimal century and unbeaten fifties off the bat of Angelo Mathews and Kamindu Mendis.
Already down 0-1 after a close loss in the opening Test, New Zealand would have been cock-a-hoop after picking up a wicket in the very first over of the game but from there on there was no looking back for the Sri Lankan batters.
Which is why it’s no surprise that Sri Lanka are now 4/11 (with 1xbet here) to win this Test while New Zealand have been pushed way back to 12/1 from this point on. A draw looks to be a tempting option at 27/10 (with Dafabet here) especially if the pitch remains this flat going into the second and third day.
What Have The Two Teams Done Recently?
Sri Lanka were put to the sword but finally managed to grab a win in the first Test of the series by overcoming New Zealand by 63 runs on the final day of the game.
Earlier, the hosts were coming off a stunning performance in the third of the three-match Test series against England, surprising their opponents at The Oval. While they lost that series 2-1, they have a lot of positives coming through and that will be something to watch out now that they are playing at home.
Before that series in England, Sri Lanka had last played a Test series against Bangladesh away from their home and were resounding winners.
They defeated their hosts by 328 runs and 192 runs respectively and while they lost 2-1 to England they are third on the WTC 2023-25 points table.
New Zealand are currently fourth on that very table but have played seven Tests of which they have won three and lost four. This includes a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Australia, a 2-0 victory over a second-string South African side and a 1-1 result in Bangladesh.
Quick Sri Lanka vs New Zealand 2nd Test Preview
Galle will continue to remain the venue for the second Test of this series too and one can expect a trial by spin yet again for the two teams.
While New Zealand struggled more with the bat in the opening Test, they can be mighty proud of their bowling – both pace, in the first innings, and spin in the second for the manner in which they stuck to their task.
Sri Lanka, however, have found some rhythm to their play and as a result of that have won back to back Tests – including one in England – to occupy the third spot on the WTC points table.
Over the last two or three years, Sri Lanka have looked to be a complete mess of a team but in more recent times, things look to be building up well. Which is why a win here would be so important as they look to stake their claim for the WTC final.
Can New Zealand, through Kane Williamson and co. bring their batting up to scratch against the likes of Prabath Jayasuriya and Ramesh Mendis?
