What is the SMAT? India has two official, domestic T20 tournaments organised by the BCCI – the Indian Premier League and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. The latter is a pure domestic competition that operates on the state versus state model, much like the Ranji Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy for the other formats.
The first ever edition of SMAT was held in 2006-07, a couple of seasons before the Indian Premier League was born. It is a 20-over-a-side tournament which follows a group-stage-cum-knock-out model.
All 38 teams that feature in the other domestic formats of the game, take part in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy as well. A total of 136 matches will be played in this year’s competition.

What Happened in the Previous Edition of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024-25?
Punjab became the first team in the history of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy to win this title three times in its history. This was after they defeated Baroda in the final of the competition in a high-scoring match that yielded over 425 runs.
After topping their group, Punjab cruised to a five-wicket win over Uttar Pradesh in the quarterfinals, routed Delhi in the semifinal and then scored 223/4 in the final. Baroda managed 203/7 in response.
