The biggest rule change for the 2024 edition of the Indian Premier League is the introduction of a second bouncer every over. What this could do is to see lower scores than usual in the IPL.
This has already forced the IPL teams’ hands during the auction, forcing them to with a plethora of fast bowlers. Aussie seamers Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc were sold for over INR 20 crore as a result of that.
The BCCI had implemented a new rule called the Impact Player rule in the 2023 edition which permits each team to designate four substitute players in their squad for a match, besides the regular playing XI.
Under this rule, one of the four substitute players can be used as a replacement during the game. Nonetheless, if all four overseas players are included in the playing XI, then the substitute player must be an Indian.
This rule will be expected to be used in the IPL 2024 as well despite its opposition from some as it reduces India’s chances of producing all-rounders.
The other rule that BCCI implemented from IPL 2023 was that the teams were allowed to name their playing XI after the toss, which will help them choose the best XI based on whether they are batting or bowling first.
This rule will also be used in 2024 as well with captains walking out for the toss with two different team sheets. This will assist teams in planning for the impact player and neutralise the impact of dew, which has traditionally had a big impact at some venues in India.
