What Have The Two Teams Done Recently?
Sri Lanka Women
Sri Lanka Women had a 58-94 win-loss record – giving them a ratio of 0.61 – coming into the tournament.
In 2024 itself though, Sri Lanka had won 15 of the 19 matches they have played including the Women’s Asia Cup triumph in which they defeated the much-fancied India Women side in the final.
They were on a six-match winning streak before Ireland surprised them in game in Dublin in August in the lead-up to this tournament.
Which is why they would have been expected to do a lot better than they have in the tournament so far, having lost all their three matches – to Pakistan, Australia and India.
New Zealand Women
The New Zealand Women’s team was shaping up to be one of the best in the world but in more recent times they had hit a bit of a rut. In fact in 2024, New Zealand had lost 12 of the 13 matches they have played which is shocking for a side which has been a two-time T20 World Cup runner-up.
Their overall record, as a result of this bad form had taken a dent and read 94-76 on win-loss before the start of this competition.
In this tournament, they started off with a facile win over India but were pegged back by Australia Women in the second game.

Quick New Zealand vs Sri Lanka Women’s T20 World Cup Preview
Things looked to be going well for New Zealand Women when they pounded India in their opener to not just win what was termed as a virtual quarterfinal but also do that by a big margin.
What has followed would, however, make New Zealand stand up and take notice.
Because they followed that win up with an expansive loss to Australia Women and now that India Women have thumped Sri Lanka, the net run-rate situation has evened out too.
What that means is New Zealand cannot afford any slip-ups against Sri Lanka in this game and if possible, they would want to win it by a big margin.
The good news for their side is that Sri Lanka have suddenly gone from winning the Women’s Asia Cup to struggling to get anything going. They had entered this tournament in such good form that their presence had turned this group into a group of death but they have done nothing to deserve that credit.
If their loss to Pakistan Women was an eye-opener, subsequent routs at the hands of Australia and India have left them with a lot of question-marks.
They would like to bow out on a high here but it looks like highly unlikely.
All Eyes On
Sri Lanka need to do better with both, the bat and ball but for the third successive game their batters have fared miserably. A lot is to do with Chamari Athapaththu‘s poor form and she has one last chance to turn that around with the bat. Amelia Kerr is slowly coming into her own with the ball and that should give her the confidence to express herself as a batter too for New Zealand.
New Zealand vs Sri Lanka Head-to-Head Stats
- Overall New Zealand vs Sri Lanka T20I Head-to-head: This has been quite a one-sided rivalry with New Zealand leading Sri Lanka 12-1 on head to head.
- That being said, Sri Lanka will take heart from the fact that the last time they met, in 2023, resulted in their first ever win over New Zealand. Interestingly that tour was also the first time Sri Lanka won an ODI against the Kiwis.
- This will be their first match in 2024.
