What Have The Two Teams Done Recently?
Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka have had a good couple of months across formats but they would be majorly delighted with their back to back series wins in ODIs.
They stunned India in a series held in August, winning it 2-0 before overcoming West Indies 2-1 in the following series.
In fact, at home, Sri Lanka have been a difficult side to defeat, having won five back to back series in their own backyard. The last time to beat them at home, however, was New Zealand in March 2023.
And this was evident by the way they eased to a win in the opening game against New Zealand here, clinching the victory by 45 runs in a rain-affected game.
New Zealand
Before the start of this series, New Zealand had last played an ODI back in December 2023, defeating Bangladesh 2-1 at home – nearly a year ago.
This had been preceded by their semifinal exit at the 2023 World Cup which was held in India.
And this rustiness was visible in the opening game here in which they capitulated to 175/9 in 27 overs chasing a DLS-adjusted target of 221.
Sri Lanka vs New Zealand Head-to-Head Stats
- Overall Sri Lanka vs New Zealand ODI Head-to-Head: There have been 103 previous ODIs between these two sides and New Zealand lead 52-42 with one game having ended in a tie.
- What’s interesting to see is that the last time Sri Lanka beat New Zealand in an ODI before the start of this series was way back in 2015. Since then there had been 10 games played, of which two ended without a result but New Zealand have won the other eight.
- Sri Lanka have a brilliant record at home though, winning 18 of the 28 matches and losing just six with four finishing without a result. This includes the opening game of this series too.
- In the last six matches played at this venue, Sri Lanka have lost just one.
Sri Lanka vs New Zealand 2nd ODI Preview & Predictions with Latest Odds*
New Zealand need to come up with answers and do that quickly or else the series would be gone. A change of venue might help but what they need is a lot better performance with both, the bat and the ball in this second game.
Because in their opener, New Zealand allowed the hosts to get away to a start and from that point onward, their bowlers were only playing catch-up. Centuries for Kusal Mendis and Avishka Fernando and a closing assault by their captain Charith Asalanka propelled Sri Lanka to 324/5 in 49.2 overs before the match was interrupted.
New Zealand had a bit of an advantage when they were given a reduced target of 221 in 27 overs. This meant they had play in a T20 manner for a slightly longer time and while Will Young and Tim Robinson added 88 for the first wicket, they took half the allocated overs to do that.
The rest of the batting couldn’t hold up to the pressure of the target and the Sri Lankan bowling and fell away quite quickly.
Someone will need to put their hand up for New Zealand here.
