What Have The Two Teams Done Recently?
Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka have had a good couple of months across formats but they would be majorly delighted with their back to back series wins in ODIs.
They stunned India in a series held in August, winning it 2-0 before overcoming West Indies 2-1 in the following series.
In fact, at home, Sri Lanka have been a difficult side to defeat, having won five back to back series in their own backyard. The last time to beat them at home, however, was New Zealand in March 2023.
And this was evident by the way they eased to a win in the opening game against New Zealand here, clinching the victory by 45 runs in a rain-affected game. They had some issues in the second ODI, chasing down a modest New Zealand score in a rain-affected game but managed to grab a win in the end to go 2-0 up.
New Zealand
Before the start of this series, New Zealand had last played an ODI back in December 2023, defeating Bangladesh 2-1 at home – nearly a year ago.
This had been preceded by their semifinal exit at the 2023 World Cup which was held in India.
And this rustiness was visible in the opening game here in which they capitulated to 175/9 in 27 overs chasing a DLS-adjusted target of 221. They seemed to have done better in the second ODI when they put up a fight with the ball but still went down to lose the series.
Sri Lanka vs New Zealand Head-to-Head Stats
- Overall Sri Lanka vs New Zealand ODI Head-to-Head: There have been 104 previous ODIs between these two sides and New Zealand lead 52-43 with one game having ended in a tie.
- What’s interesting to see is that the last time Sri Lanka beat New Zealand in an ODI before the start of this series was way back in 2015. Since then there had been 12 games played, of which two ended without a result but New Zealand have won the other eight. Sri Lanka have now won two in this series.
- Sri Lanka have a brilliant record at home though, winning 19 of the 29 matches and losing just six with four finishing without a result. This includes the opening two matches of this series too.
- In the last seven matches played at this venue, Sri Lanka have lost just one.
Sri Lanka vs New Zealand 3rd ODI Preview & Predictions with Latest Odds*
As has been mentioned elsewhere in these previews, Sri Lanka have become a way stronger team at home than usual and New Zealand have been bearing the brunt of that.
So while the tourists put up a far stronger show, especially with the ball, in the second ODI they were left with nothing but another loss.
First, New Zealand were restricted to 209 all out in a 47-over-a-side game and then while they had Sri Lanka at 163 for seven at one stage, they weren’t able to clinch the win. This was down to Janith Liyanage, Dunith Wellalage and Maheesh Theekshana, the home team’s numbers seven, eight and nine who scored 67 runs between them.
All of them gave great support to the man-of-the-match Kusal Mendis, who had made a 143 in his previous ODI.
New Zealand can expect to encounter similar conditions in the third ODI as well but it might not be a bad idea for them to bat first again and put up a stronger score. Chasing isn’t an easy job here as the pitch becomes slower.
