What Have The Two Teams Done Recently?
Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe have fallen away drastically in the one-day game. Having made the Super Six stage at both, the 1999 World Cup and 2003 World Cup, they have won just three of their last 12 matches against Full Member countries.
Such has been their fall from form, Zimbabwe have been forced to play in Qualifiers to make it to the ICC events – although as hosts of the 2027 World Cup they have a direct entry – and were neither a part of the 2023 World Cup, nor will feature in the 2025 Champions Trophy.
And this was on display in the first game here too when they fell to 44/5 even before 10 overs were bowled before the game was abandoned.
Afghanistan
It’s been an interesting year for Afghanistan as far as ODI cricket is concerned. Coming into the season on the back of a solid performance at the 2023 World Cup, Afghanistan were beaten 3-0 by Sri Lanka earlier in the year but have followed that up with three successive series wins.
These include a 2-0 win over Ireland, and 2-1 wins against South Africa and Bangladesh as well.
And they looked to have settled in well in Zimbabwe as well when they broke their opponent’s back by picking up five quick wickets only for rain to have the final say.
Zimbabwe vs Afghanistan Head-to-Head Stats
- Overall Zimbabwe vs Afghanistan ODI Head-to-Head: There have been a total of 29 matches played between these two teams and Afghanistan lead 18-10 here with one game, the first of this very series, having ended as no result.
- Before the start of this series, Afghanistan had won their last three matches against Zimbabwe, all of which came in Harare itself in 2022.
- Afghanistan were also 6-1 on win-loss over the last seven matches against Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe vs Afghanistan 2nd ODI Preview & Predictions with Latest Odds*
While the opening game of this series was rained off, it gave us enough indications about how things will be headed as we get down the longer formats of the game.
Zimbabwe’s best chance was in the T20Is and they did what they needed to do there. Now, in the ODIs, Afghanistan will start off as heavy favourites and they looked like they were headed to a facile win before it started raining.
In a game reduced to 28 overs, Azmatullah Omarzai broke the Zimbabwe batting back by picking up four quick wickets and reduced the hosts to 44/5.
The good news is that the weather looks fine for the second ODI and we should get a full game. And that should allow the visitors to pick right off from where they left things in the opener.
