What Have The Two Teams Done Recently?
Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe have fallen away drastically in the one-day game as was on display in the first ODI of this series as well. Not only did they lose their second game of this series but they did in such a fashion that there would be worries about how they go about their business in the rest of the series.
Having made the Super Six stage at both, the 1999 World Cup and 2003 World Cup, they have won just three of their last 12 matches against Full Member countries.
Such has been their fall from form, Zimbabwe have been forced to play in Qualifiers to make it to the ICC events – although as hosts of the 2027 World Cup they have a direct entry – and were neither a part of the 2023 World Cup, nor will feature in the 2025 Champions Trophy.
And this was on display in the first game here too when they fell to 44/5 even before 10 overs were bowled before the game was abandoned.
Afghanistan
It’s been an interesting year for Afghanistan as far as ODI cricket is concerned.
Coming into the season on the back of a solid performance at the 2023 World Cup, Afghanistan were beaten 3-0 by Sri Lanka earlier in the year but have followed that up with three successive series wins.
These include a 2-0 win over Ireland, and 2-1 wins against South Africa and Bangladesh as well.
And they looked to have settled in well in Zimbabwe as well when they broke their opponent’s back by picking up five quick wickets only for rain to have the final say.
They followed that up with a rollicking performance in the second ODI that saw them grab a win in the second ODI by a whopping 232 runs.

- Afghanistan are now 7-1 on win-loss over the last eight matches against Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe vs Afghanistan 3rd ODI Preview & Predictions with Latest Odds*
Zimbabwe managed to put up a bit of a fight in the T20Is but it was well expected how things might go in the ODIs. The first game had been washed out but not before Afghanistan had run through the Zimbabwe top-order, giving an insight about how things might pan out.
Come the second game, Afghanistan were put into bat but Zimbabwe’s bowlers failed to extract any early help as Sediqullah Atal and Abdul Malik pumelled them with a 191-run stand for the first wicket.
Chasing the eventual 287 for a win, Zimbabwe were then bowled out for 54, their lowest ODI score in the last 15 years.
And while they might look to improve on their batting performance slightly with a lot more application, it seems almost impossible to see them get to a score that might challenge Afghanistan.
