What Have The Two Teams Done Recently?
Australia
It’s been a while since Australia played a Test, having featured in a two-match series way back in March in New Zealand. They had clinched that series 2-0.
The last time they played at home was last Aussie summer in which they crushed Pakistan 3-0 and looked to be on their way to winning the series against West Indies 2-0 as well before the men in maroon crashed into their party with a late victory in the second Test.
Overall, Australia have 414-232 win-loss record in Tests and in more recent times, i.e. since January 2020, they are a whopping 22-8.
India
India have already featured in five home Tests this season and rather shockingly, lost their first ever home series since 2012.
In fact they were at the receiving end of many a records in that series – losing their first ever Test series at home to New Zealand and getting whitewashed at home for the first time in a three-match Test series.
Earlier they had beaten Bangladesh 2-0.
Overall, India’s Test win-loss record is at 180-181 following those three defeats to New Zealand and since January 2020, they have a 23-16 win-loss record.
Australia vs India Head-to-Head Stats
- Overall Australia vs India Tests Head-to-Head: There have been 107 Tests played between these two great teams and Australia lead 45-32 on overall head to head.
- What’s fascinating to see is that over the last four Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, India have won them all. And even more coincidentally, India grabbed them by 2-1 margins. The last time Australia won a Test series against India was way back in 2014.
- Australia have a stellar record at home against India, having won 30 and lost just nine of their matches.
- However, this record has taken a bit of a beating over the last 10 years with 12 Tests yielding four wins apiece for both teams along with four draws.
Ground & Weather Updates
The first Test of this series will be played at the Perth Stadium in Perth, which opened to Test cricket in 2018. Four Tests have been played here and Australia have won them all – including one against India by 148 runs in 2018. Last year, Australia crushed Pakistan by 360 runs at this very venue.
Interestingly, Australia have won the toss at this venue every single time and decided to bat first on all occasions. Other than the first Test against India, Australia have made 400+ runs in the first innings of all the remaining three.
A bit of rain is expected on the day before the start of this Test but the weather is expected to remain clear through most of the match. It’s expected to be coolish opening day before the temperatures rise to 29 degrees celcius as the game progresses – which could mean the pitch doesn’t deteriorate as quickly as it usually could do.
Australia vs India 1st Test Preview & Predictions with Latest Odds*
It’s been an interesting build-up to the start of this series. With all eyes on this thanks to India’s performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy over the past seven years, they looked to have taken their foot off the pedal in their home series against New Zealand.
The result? A 3-0 drubbing at home at the hands of the Kiwis which set a plethora of unwanted records against them.
And now, India comes into this tour with captain Rohit Sharma out of the first Test after opting to stay back for the birth of his second child, Shubman Gill missing this game because of a fractured thumb, Mohammad Shami ruled out of at least the first couple of Tests because of fitness concerns and Virat Kohli struggling for runs.
On the other hand, Australia look like a well-oiled unit with only one question-mark – how will their new opener Nathan McSweeny go on his debut.
Their bowling looks settled and while Cameron Green has been ruled out of the series, they have Mitchell Marsh taking over the all-rounder’s role. With Steven Smith showing the old touch in the ODIs against Pakistan, it seems like Australia have all their bases covered and at Perth, they might hold the edge.
