What Have The Two Teams Done Recently?
Australia
Before the start of this series, it had been a while since Australia had played a Test, having featured in a two-match series way back in March in New Zealand. They had clinched that series 2-0.
And the last time they played at home was last Aussie summer in which they crushed Pakistan 3-0 and looked to be on their way to winning the series against West Indies 2-0 as well before the men in maroon crashed into their party with a late victory in the second Test.
This rustiness showed as Australia capitulated to an easy defeat in their opener here to India.
Overall, Australia have 414-233 win-loss record in Tests and in more recent times, i.e. since January 2020, they are a whopping 22-9 despite that Perth defeat.
India
Coming into this series, India had featured in five home Tests this season and rather shockingly, lost their first ever home series since 2012.
In fact they were at the receiving end of many a records in that series – losing their first ever Test series at home to New Zealand and getting whitewashed at home for the first time in a three-match Test series.
Earlier they had beaten Bangladesh 2-0.
What this meant was that when they defeated Australia in Perth, it led the experts to call it India’s best Test win overseas and for heads to roll in the Aussie camp.
Overall, India’s Test win-loss record is at 181-181 following the opening win and since January 2020, they have a 24-16 win-loss record.
Australia vs India Head-to-Head Stats
- Overall Australia vs India Tests Head-to-Head: There have been 108 Tests played between these two great teams and Australia lead 45-33 on overall head to head at the end of the opening game of this series.
- What’s fascinating to see is that over the last four Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, India have won them all. And even more coincidentally, India grabbed them by 2-1 margins. The last time Australia won a Test series against India was way back in 2014.
- Australia have a stellar record at home against India despite losing the opening Test, having won 30 and lost just 10 of their matches.
- However, this record has taken a bit of a beating over the last 10 years with 13 Tests yielding four wins for Australia and five for India to go with four draws.
Ground & Weather Updates
It would be interesting to see how the weather holds up. No rain is predicted during the Test but the maximum temperate in the lead-up to the Test was expected to touch a hot, 38 degrees centigrade.
Whether this has any bearing on the make-up of the sides remains to be seen but it could dry out the surface quickly and hasten the cracks-formation if the game does get into the final two days.
Adelaide Oval has been hosting Tests since the 1880s. In more recent times, Australia have had a stellar record here, having won each of their last five Tests played here including the one in 2020-21 against India when they bowled the visitors out for 36.
Australia’s margins of wins in these last five Tests at this ground:
- 10 wickets v West Indies
- 419 runs v West Indies
- 275 runs v England
- 8 wickets v India
- innings & 48 runs v Pakistan
Australia vs India 1st Test Preview & Predictions with Latest Odds*
Aah, who would have thought we would be where we are a day before the start of the Adelaide Test. By all counts, Australia had all but won the opening Test at Perth even before it had started and even the most ardent of Indian fan had conceded they wouldn’t have much of a chance.
And when India were bowled out for 150 in the first innings of that first Test, the writing seemed to be on the wall.
Except, it only seemed like that. Because over the following three days, Jasprit Bumrah dismantled the Australian batting piece by piece with the ball, Yashasvi Jaiswal showed why he is already rated so highly and Virat Kohli displayed the kind of batsmanship that has made him among the best.
Not to forget, contributions from KL Rahul, Mohammad Siraj and even Nitish Kumar Reddy, all combining to stun an opposition that looked rusty, progressively sore and with cracks within the set-up that matched those found on the Perth pitch.
This is not to say that Australia cannot bounce back. Far from it.
One cannot forget the manner in which they came back from two losses in a row at the 2023 World Cup including one to India to win the tournament by beating them in the final.
One cannot also forget that this is a proud cricketing nation that refuses to give up and it could take just one special effort for their batting to get back to their best again.
Which is why, India cannot afford to rest on their laurels but at the same time they would understand that a Test is won over five days – or 3.5 days as has become the norm these days – and a bad session or two never made a summer.
