Champions Trophy 2025 Preview
Cricket fans worldwide will welcome the return of the Champions Trophy, an ICC event last played in 2017.
It was also the last time that Pakistan won an ICC event and the memories of that title victory will be etched in the minds of Pakistan fans forever given they defeated arch-rivals and favourites India in the final of that event to grab the tournament.
This time, the holders will also be the hosts, giving them a good chance to defend their title.
However, there are question marks around Pakistan cricket after having struggled through three events in a row – the 2023 Asia Cup and ODI World Cup and the 2024 T20 World Cup.
The other question mark was over the participation of India in this tournament.
It was difficult to envisage an ICC event without India, and it was also tough to foresee the Indian government permitting the team to play in Pakistan.
And with the PCB grossly against the idea of having a tournament hosted by them, India forced their hand by opting to play their matches in another country.
Australia and England will enter the tournament under different circumstances – the former having become a white-ball giant while the latter struggling to live up to the expectation and the pathway set up by Eoin Morgan.
With South Africa also gaining traction in white ball cricket in recent times, it could be down to two of these three teams to make the semifinal but Afghanistan have already shown in the 2024 T20 World Cup they are a side to reckon.
On the other hand, India and Pakistan will have Bangladesh and New Zealand in their group. Bangladesh have struggled in ICC events more recently while New Zealand look like they are going through a bit of a transition.
With India playing a brand of cricket that has enthralled the world, they look good to make the semifinals from their group. The New Zealand versus Pakistan match could decide the second semifinalist from that group.
Everything about the Champions Trophy 2025
The 2025 Champions Trophy will be an eight-team competition that will be hosted in Pakistan.
For now, Rawalpindi, Lahore and Karachi are expected to be the three venues that will host all 15 matches but more details on this are still awaited, especially given the state of the stadiums and the fact that India hasn’t toured Pakistan since 2008.
The eight teams will be divided into two groups of four each team will face the other three in their group – making it three matches at the very least for each of the teams. The top two sides at the end of the group stage of the competition will make the semifinals which will be followed by the final.
This will be the first edition of the Champions Trophy since 2017, a tournament that was held in the UK.
The two groups associated with the 2025 Champions Trophy are as follows:
- Group A: India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, New Zealand
- Group B – Australia, Afghanistan, England, South Africa

What Happened in the Previous Champions Trophy?
It was Pakistan who grabbed their maiden Champions Trophy title when they surprised arch-rivals and favourite India in the championship game. In what turned out to be a facile result, Pakistan crushed India by 180 runs to grab the title.
This was after India had eased past Pakistan in the group stages of the competition before losing to Sri Lanka and clinching their semifinal berth with a victory over South Africa.
Pakistan made it through to the semifinals with wins over South Africa and Sri Lanka.
The other group had a bizarre feel to it with England topping the table with three wins from three matches and they were joined by Bangladesh in the semifinal. This was because of a win over New Zealand and a game that was abandoned against Australia.
What made the situation worse was Australia’s loss to England knocked them out because their other two matches were both rained out.
In the semifinal, India crushed Bangladesh while Pakistan overcame England on a slow pitch in Cardiff.
