ICC Champions Trophy 2025 Format
The top seven teams in the world from the 2023 World Cup along with hosts Pakistan qualified for this edition of the Champions Trophy. What this meant was that Sri Lanka and the Netherlands missed out because of net run rate despite finishing on the same points (four) as Bangladesh.
The eight teams that qualified for the 2025 Champions Trophy include hosts and defending champions Pakistan, the 2023 World Cup finalists India and Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, England, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.
These eight teams will be divided into two groups of four apiece and each team in a group will face off against the other three in their group. At the end of this group stage of the competition, the top two sides from each group will make the semifinals with the winners of those two matches entering the final.
According to confirmed reports, the two groups are as follows:
- Group A: India, Pakistan, New Zealand, Bangladesh
- Group B: Australia, England, Afghanistan, South Africa
What Happened in the Previous Champions Trophy?
Pakistan won the 2017 edition of the Champions Trophy by beating arch-rivals India in the final. They won a one-sided title decider by 180 runs to lift what was their last ICC trophy to date.
Earlier in the tournament, India had beaten Pakistan in their opening game easily but wins over South Africa and Sri Lanka helped Pakistan clinch their semifinal berth. India lost to Sri Lanka before defeating South Africa in a virtual quarterfinal to make it through.
In the other group, England won all their matches to top the table and aided by an abandoned game against Australia and a stunning win over New Zealand, Bangladesh became the second team to qualify for the semifinals.
Australia were left with a defeat at the hands of England and then saw both their remaining games getting washed out by rain that left them knocked out.
In the semifinal, India eased past Bangladesh in Edgbaston while Pakistan routed England in Cardiff to set up a mouth-watering final.
