What Have The Two Teams Done Recently?
England
ODIs haven’t quite been very high on England’s priority list in recent times and that can be seen from the fact that we are in the ninth month of 2024 and they haven’t played a game!
That’s right, England’s last ODI before the start of this series came late in 2023 as a part of an ODI series against West Indies. They had lost that 2-1 to the home team, which had been preceded by a horrible performance in the 2023 World Cup in which they had managed to win just four of the nine games they had played.
In this series, they looked like they were in deep trouble when they went down 2-0 in the first two matches but a Harry Brook century bailed them out of their issues in the third game.
Australia
While Australia also haven’t played a lot of ODI in recent times, their form in this format has been in sharp contrast to their opponent’s.
They were coming off a 3-0 series win over West Indies which came in February at home and that had followed their World Cup 2023 victory, in which they had won nine in a row.
By winning the first two ODIs of this series, they won 14 matches on the trot, the second-best ever run in ODI cricket before they lost in the third game of the series.
Quick England v Australia 4th ODI Preview
A win at long last for England and they would be heaving a mighty sigh of relief.
Because whatever one says about the second-string nature of their line-up, they would know there were talks of an incoming 5-0 whitewash and that’s something they would have hoped to overcome.
Harry Brook led from the front in the third game, scoring an unbeaten century and together with Will Jacks, added 156 in double-quick time. It was their effort that put England in front by some distance when the rains came down and ended the game.
Australia shouldn’t be too perturbed though.
Sure the England pair managed to achieve what they did, their bowling can get better as they shrug off their rustiness. Adam Zampa’s absence was also felt at some level after having missed out the last game because of illness.
England v Australia Head-to-Head Stats
