Third Test Daily Update & Odds
Day Three
Who would have thought that come the fourth day, Sri Lanka would start off as 1/8 (1xbet) favourite to clinch the third and final Test of the series.
Especially from the kind of positions that Sri Lanka found themselves in – at one stage, England were 191 for two and then 261/3 in the first innings.
On the other hand, Sri Lanka were 93/5 in response in their own first innings before recovering to 263 all out.
Even here, England had a 62-run lead and in their second innings, had 56 on the board for the loss of two wickets. Bowled out for 156.
What that meant was Sri Lanka needed just 219 to win the game and at the end of the third day’s play gotten themselves to 94/1. The match is theirs to lose and that shows in the odds on offer too with 1xbet offering 5/1 for an England win.
Day Two
Rain has continued to affect the game but it has still moved at a brisk pace with Sri Lanka first collapsing to 93/5 and then recovering to make 211 for five at the end of the day’s play. It was down to Dhananjaya de Silva and Kamindu Mendis yet again to do the rescue act.
This was following the England collapse which saw them go from 261/3 to 325 all out.
What this does is to even the contest out a little with England still ahead. 1xbet are offering 8/13 for an England victory while Sri Lanka have moved on to 5/2 having been 7/1 after day one.
Day One
With rain playing a part on the first day of The Oval Test, there were less than 45 overs possible. And England being the way they have been for a while now, still managed to pile up 221 for three in that much time. Ben Duckett smashed a 79-ball 86 and Ollie Pope was unbeaten on a run-a-ball 103 when the stumps were called because of the inclement weather.
What’s interesting to note is that overcast conditions are expected throughout the remainder of the Test with rain also forecast on three of the four days. The second day’s play looks clean, but the question is whether they will get all their overs in despite that.
England will kick-start day two at 4/11 (with 1xbet) to win it while a draw is the second favourite option at 4/1. Sri Lanka are someway away at 7/1 at this stage.
What Have The Two Teams Done Recently?
England, who were coming off a 3-0 rout of West Indies at home which helped them move up the WTC points table, are now in line to make it another 3-0.
Having earlier slumped down to ninth on the points table following a 4-1 loss at the hands of India, England have moved up to fourth as a result of these five wins over West Indies and Sri Lanka.
Gus Atkinson, who was the standout bowler in that series with 22 wickets at 16.22 and Joe Root who topped the batting charts with 291 runs at 72.75 in that West Indies series, have been at the top of their games yet again, combining to win England the second Test.
Sri Lanka last played a Test series against Bangladesh away from their home and were resounding winners. They defeated their hosts by 328 runs and 192 runs respectively to move up to the fourth spot on the WTA points table with two wins and two defeats.
As a result of these two losses they are back at the seventh spot on the WTC 2023-25 points table.
Quick ENG vs SL 3rd Test Preview
Sri Lanka have done well in snatches but the more consistent team in this series, and by some distance, has been England. They will be favourites to clinch it 3-0.
What was fascinating to watch was Sri Lanka’s captain Dhananjaya de Silva’s reasoning for fielding first after winning the toss – his batters were not in the best frame of mind. With that kind of an attitude, it would get even more difficult to make things work out in the game.
Having not had the greatest time in the World Test Championship and only thanks to Pakistan’s poor performances, Sri Lanka have managed to hold on to the seventh spot on that table.
England, on the other hand, have been rapidly climbing up that table and a win here will go a long way in pushing them back into the top four. They will know that despite winning five matches in a row, their performances against India have left them with a lot of heavy lifting to be done here.
With the team functioning well, their only concern areas seem to be the form of Dan Lawrence and Ollie Pope with the bat.
