Quick GT vs MI Preview
Gujarat Titans have had the kind of start to their IPL campaigns that not too many would have experienced in the world of sport, especially coming into a well-established league.
The question now is if they can maintain that start, having lost their charismatic captain Hardik Pandya to Mumbai Indians.
Shubman Gill will be leading them in what will be his first time as skipper and that will be an interesting proposition to watch after the opening batter showed his mental strength in the recently-concluded India vs England Test series.
Mumbai Indians have a few problems and they are to do with what the fans perceive of them. Rohit Sharma was forced to relinquish his captaincy and the manner in which it happened hasn’t gone down too well with some fans.
There had even been suggestions that Rohit could look to skip the IPL but for now it seems there is no such eventuality in the making. A couple of solid performances to kick their season off could change things around given how short fan memories are.
What Have The Two Teams Done So Far?
Mumbai Indians are a five-time champion having won their last two titles in 2019 and 2020. Since then, however, the formerly Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians have dished out a few underwhelming performances.
In 2021, they finished fifth on the table, narrowly missing out on the playoffs. This was followed by their worst ever performance as Mumbai Indians ended 10th in 2022 with just four wins.
Last year, Mumbai Indians did make the playoffs but were stopped in their tracks by Gujarat Titans in the second Qualifier.
As I said earlier, Gujarat has done things not too many sides manage to do this early in a league as entrenched as the IPL. They won the tournament in 2022 before making it to the final of the 2023 edition.
Unfortunately for them their winning streak was ended by Chennai Super Kings. Still their overall record of 23-10 gives them a winning percentage of 69.69, the highest in the league.
Interesting GT vs MI Stats
- GT vs MI Head-to-head: It’s 2-2 on head to head which includes the aforementioned win for Gujarat in the 2023 playoffs.
- Current Gujarat captain Shubman Gill won the Orange Cap last season with 890 runs under his belt. That is the most runs any player has scored in one season of the IPL. That he scored his runs at a strike-rate of over 150 just adds more chutzpah to his performance
- The last time Rohit Sharma scored over 400 runs in a single edition of the IPL was in 2019. Since then he has averaged 27.66, 29.3, 19.14 and 20.75 in the following seasons with a strike-rate of around 125.
