2024 T20 World Cup Format
This will be the first ever edition which will see a total of 20 teams fight it out in the competition. And unlike some of the previous editions, all the teams will get a direct entry into the tournament instead of having to go through a first round which used to be used as a qualifier to enter the second round.
These 20 teams will be divided into four groups of five teams with each side facing the other four in their group.
At the end of this group stage of the competition, the top two sides from each of the groups will advance to the second round, or what is called the Super Eight round.
At this stage, the eight teams will be divided into two groups of four teams apiece and will play three more matches.
The top two teams from each of the groups would then go on to enter the semifinals which will be followed by the final.
- Group A: India, Pakistan, Ireland, Canada, USA
- Group B: England, Australia, Namibia, Scotland, Oman
- Group C: New Zealand, West Indies, Afghanistan, Uganda, Papua New Guinea
- Group D: South Africa, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Netherlands, Nepal
How to buy T20 World Cup tickets for 2024?
The latest update from the ICC around the T20 World Cup tickets for 2024 is as follows.
You need to register your interest with the official ICC website here before February 8, 2024. Once you have done that, you will need to log in and choose the tickets you want to buy by that date.
It’s a ballot process which it means that one doesn’t need to worry about trying to get hold of these tickets on a first-come-first-serve basis.
The computer will generate the lucky winners of these tickets and a pre-decided date will be given by the ICC by which cricket fans will need to pay for those tickets applied for.
The tickets are priced differently for different games.
Take the example of the India games itself – the lowest-priced ticket for their game is $45 for their game against Canada while two of their other matches are going to cost patrons $90 at least.
The tickets for the match between India and Pakistan will cost you $170 at the very least!
The India-Pakistan match tickets can be expected to be sold out like hotcakes and if you aren’t able to buy these tickets from the official website, a secondary ticketing website like Viagogo.com could be the way to go about it.
The ticket prices here might not be the same as official value and for a match like India-Pakistan, it could be sold at a much higher price. Please check and re-check any ICC match tickets you might buy from anywhere other than the official website multiple times.
Where to watch the T20 World Cup in 2024?
More information on this will be released soon.
What Happened at the Previous ICC T20 World Cup?
England won their second T20 World Cup title in 2022 when they crushed Pakistan in the final of the competition. This was after they had sent the 2007 winners India packing in the semifinal chasing down 167 without loss in 16 overs.
In the final, Pakistan slumped to 137/8 from their 20 overs with Shan Masood getting 38. In response a slow but dependable half-century from the bat of Ben Stokes helped England to a five-wicket win with an over to spare.
Earlier during the group stages of the tournament, India and Pakistan had clashed and played one of the best matches of the tournament if not the best. Chasing 160 for a win, India had struggled through most part of their chase and needed 28 to win off eight balls at one stage.
Back-to-back sixes from Virat Kohli off Haris Rauf brought the equation down to 16 from the last over and while Hardik Pandya was dismissed off the first ball of the 20th over, Kohli took advantage of a no-ball off which he hit a six to bring India home.
Pakistan looked like they were heading out of the tournament when they lost to Zimbabwe by a run but South Africa, who had beaten India, lost to both Pakistan and Netherlands to crash out instead.
In the other group, New Zealand, Australia and England finished with seven points apiece but Australia’s crushing 89-run loss at the hands of New Zealand proved to be the deciding factor. It was the Kiwis and England who went through to the semifinals.
