What Have The Two Teams Done Recently?
India
India is the team to beat when it comes to home Tests. They are coming off a 2-0 rout of Bangladesh before this, a result that was possible thanks to a brilliant batting approach from them in a game that was washed out for nearly three days.
Before that, they defeated England at home, winning 4-1, giving them the top spot on the WTC points table as a result of that.
New Zealand
New Zealand’s recent form in Test match cricket has been anything but extraordinary. They were held to a 1-1 draw in Bangladesh late last year and while they defeated a South African C team at home, New Zealand have lost four successive Tests since then – two to Australia and two to Sri Lanka.
A Test against Afghanistan was completed washed out.
India vs New Zealand Head-to-Head Stats
- Overall India vs New Zealand Test Head-to-Head: Overall there have been 62 Tests played between these two teams and India leads New Zealand 22-13.
- At home, however, India have won 17 and lost just two matches – the last of those losses having come in 1988 at the Wankhede Stadium.
- Since that defeat in Mumbai, India have won 10 and drawn nine Tests at home against the Black Caps.
India vs New Zealand 1st Test Preview & Predictions with Latest Odds*
India’s form at home is difficult to surmount and with New Zealand having struggled to get going in this format in recent times, it is bound to get tougher. Where New Zealand could struggle even more is with the absence of Kane Williamson for at least the first Test because of a groin strain.
Interestingly, Williamson averages a mere 33 in India in Tests so while his experience will be missed, he hasn’t done a lot of scoring here. In fact the best current New Zealand batter as far as Test averages in India go, is captain Tom Latham who has scored jut 35.7 per innings.
The home team doesn’t need to make too many changes but what they will need to keep an eye on is the weather what with rain predicted on all five days of the game. The good news is that the drainage system at the stadium is a much-improved one and should allow things to start immediately unlike the one in Kanpur.
