IPL Auction 2025 Rule Changes
The IPL 2025 auction will feature a total of 574 players, including 366 Indians and 208 overseas players, three of whom are from Associate nations. Among the 330 uncapped players, 318 are Indian, while 12 are from overseas. Teams will aim to fill 204 slots, with 70 reserved for overseas players. Notably, for the first time since the 2018 auction, the marquee list has been divided into two categories.
IPL Auction Retentions and RTM
- IPL franchises can retain a total of 6 players from their existing squad through retention or Right to Match (RTM).
- Up to FIVE of these can be capped players (Indian and Overseas).
- Up to TWO of these can be uncapped players.
- The combination of retentions and RTMs is at the franchise’s discretion. For e.g., if a team retains four players before the auction, they can use the RTM card twice during the auction.
- The retentions and RTMs will impact the auction purse based on the choices made by the teams.
Auction Purse Increase
- The auction purse has increased by 20% and is set at INR 120 Crore for IPL 2025.
- Total salary cap (including auction purse, incremental performance pay, and match fees) will rise:
- Rs. 146 Cr in 2025
- Rs. 151 Cr in 2026
- Rs. 157 Cr in 2027
Retention Salary Deductions
- For every player retained by a franchise based on the aforementioned rules proposed by the IPL GC, the owners will need to shell out a fee which will be deducted from their purse of INR 120 crore.
- The first retained capped player will cost the franchise INR 18 crore in purse money.
- The second retained capped player will cost the franchise a further INR 14 crore in purse money.
- The first retained capped player will cost the franchise a further INR 11 crore in purse money.
- The first retained capped player will cost the franchise a further INR 18 crore in purse money.
- The first retained capped player will cost the franchise a further INR 14 crore in purse money.
- Retaining uncapped players will cost the franchise INR 4 crore in purse money.
- The above figures are minimum – so to retain a player whose salary is higher than the aforementioned figures, that salary would be taken to calculate the team’s remaining purse.
How Will RTM Work?
- Let’s assume Team A releases player X into the auction and Team B wins the bid to buy him in the auction for, say INR 5 crore. Team A then uses their RTM card to buy back player X into their squad. Team B will then have a chance to increase their price to their last offer price to buy the player which, if matched by Team X will then allow X to buy him for that new price. If they don’t want to pay that price, Team B will be able to buy X for that new price.
- Explaining this with an example. Say Mohit Sharma is released into the auction by Gujarat Titans and after ensuing bids, Rajasthan Royals win him for INR 3 crore. Gujarat use their RTM card to which Rajasthan will now have a choice to raise their bid one final time. Say, RR reckons they are ready to pay INR 5 crore for Mohit now. It will now be up to the Titans to decide if they want to shell out INR 5 crore to buy Mohit Sharma using their RTM card or let him go to RR.
Uncapped Player Rule Update
- A capped Indian player becomes uncapped if they haven’t played in the starting XI in International Cricket (Test, ODI, T20) for 5 years preceding the relevant IPL season.
- The player must also not have a Central Contract with BCCI.
- This rule applies only to Indian players.
- This rule will allow a team like Chennai Super Kings to retain MS Dhoni as an uncapped player.
Foreign Player Availability
- Overseas players must register for the Big Auction to be eligible for participation.
- If a player doesn’t register for the Big Auction, they will be ineligible for the following year’s player auction.
- Any player who gets picked in the auction but makes themselves unavailable before the season will be banned for 2 seasons from participating in the tournament and auctions.
Impact Player Rule
- The Impact Player rule will continue until 2027.
- No reasons were provided for retaining the rule.
Match Fees for Players
- Players will receive a match fee of INR 7.5 Lakh per game played in addition to their contracted amount.

Biggest Signings 2024
Aussie fast bowlers Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc became the biggest signings of the IPL ever.

The Titans also brought in Indian wicket-keeper batter Robin Minz for INR 3.6 crore, while Yash Dayal went to Royal Challengers Bangalore for INR 5 crore.
