What Have The Two Teams Done Recently?
New Zealand
New Zealand were coming into this series with the kind of confidence that no other team has had in more than 12 years. Because they became the first team in 12 years to win a series in India.
Not just that, New Zealand were coming off a 2-0 rout at the hands of Sri Lanka and then turned it around to win 3-0 against the mighty Indians.
That win had given them the fourth spot on the WTC 2023-25 points table but they are now fifth following a defeat in the opening Test to England.
England
England have had a very up and down time in Tests recently with the ups having come at home and the downs having been away.
They beat West Indies 3-0 and clinched a 2-1 series victory against Sri Lanka at home but these results were sandwiched by a 4-1 loss to India and a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Pakistan away.
What that meant was that England were all but out of the reckoning for a place in the final of the WTC. A victory in the first Test here pushed them up to sixth on the table and they will need to win them all and hope for some other results to go their way to make the final.

- In New Zealand, the hosts are 7-20 on win-loss which is way better than the 6-33 record they have in England.
- The last time they met was in early 2023 before the opening Test and New Zealand had clinched a rather stunning victory after following on. They had won it by 1 run.
New Zealand vs England 2nd Test Preview & Predictions with Latest Odds*
New Zealand had their chances to get the better of England in the opening Test but a plethora of dropped catches ended their hopes.
They could have easily bowled England out for 100 runs lesser than the 499 the tourists got in their first innings and a target of over 250 might not have been the easiest to chase down.
Still, New Zealand also need to look closely at the way they batted, falling to 348 and 254 on a track that had a little something in it but not enough to give Shoaib Bashir a four-wicket haul.
They will also need to find a way to get Will Young back into the XI after the kind of series he had in India.
