Everything about the Sheffield Shield 2024-25
What is the Sheffield Shield? The latest season of Sheffield Shield will be played over the 2024-25 Australian cricket season. It is the first class competition played in Australia in which their six state sides face off against each other in a round-robin format.
The first ever edition of this competition was held way back in 1892-93 with New South Wales having won the title a record 47 times in their history.
Sheffield Shield is played in a home-and-away format with each team facing off against the other five sides in the competition both, at home and away from home. At the end of these ten rounds of matches, the top two sides enter the final.
Points are awarded for wins, first innings leads and bonus points for the runs scored and wickets taken in the first 100 overs of batting and bowling.
How Does the Sheffield Shield Point System Work?
Unlike some of the other first-class domestic tournaments around the world, the point system for Sheffield Shield is slightly more complicated.
For starters teams winning a game earn six points while there is one point awarded for a drawn match.
To go with that, there is an additional bonus point of 0.01 for each run score above 200 in the first 100 overs of their first innings. Bowling teams each 0.1 as bonus point for every wicket taken in that same period.
