The Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai is one of the much-vaunted cricket stadiums in India having played host to India’s World Cup 2011 final win over Sri Lanka. It hosts the Indian cricket team for international Test, ODI and T20 matches, the Mumbai team in first-class and List-A cricket and the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League.
This stadium was constructed in 1974 after the original cricket stadium in Mumbai, the Brabourne Stadium ran into issues with the Mumbai Cricket Association over the allocation of tickets. The MCA opted to go ahead with the building of its cricket stadium and it hosted its first ever match in 1975 when India played West Indies.

Notable Events at the Wankhede Stadium
The first ever day-night match at the Wankhede Stadium was played at the 1996 World Cup when India took on Australia and lost a closely-fought encounter. Since then the ground has been reconstructed in the lead-up to the 2011 World Cup which was held in the subcontinent and the newly rebuilt stadium hosted three matches including the final which India won.
Originally the capacity of the Wankhede Stadium was 39,000 but following its reconstruction, the number of seats has been reduced to 32,000. The one advantage of the reconstructed Wankhede Stadium is the absence of any beam support which used to take away from the spectator viewing experience in earlier days.
One of the unique aspects of Wankhede Stadium is the soil used for the pitch. It’s the red soil, as opposed to the black soil at most other cricketing grounds in India, affording a lot more bounce and turn.
Virat Kohli had hit a double-century, a 235 at the Wankhede Stadium which is the highest score by any batsman at this ground. This had helped India post a score of 631 against England in that played in 2016-17, the highest again in this stadium.
How to get to Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai by Bus, Metro or Train?
Wankhede Stadium Address: WRQG+G8R, D Rd, Churchgate, Mumbai, Maharashtra 400020
Nearest Metro Station: Churchgate station
If you are taking a local train to get to the Wankhede Stadium, you must take the Western Line from whichever station is closest to where you are and get down at the Churchgate station. It is a five-minute walk from that station.
On match days this could take slightly longer as you could see fellow cricket fans thronging outside the stadium. Plus the security around the stadium and at the gates is thick, which takes far longer to get inside the ground. Account for anywhere between 30-60 minutes once you have reached the Churchgate station to get to your seats at the Wankhede Stadium.
If you are coming to the Wankhede Stadium from the Mumbai airport, it could take you nearly an hour and a half to get here by road. The other option is to cab it from the airport to the Andheri train station and take a train from there to Churchgate. This obviously could be a challenge if you have a lot of luggage.
If your outstation train is arriving in Mumbai at the Mumbai Central Station, you can cab it down to the Wankhede Stadium in less than 20 minutes.
