Women’s Ashes Series Preview
The Women’s Ashes first started in 1934-35 and since then there have been 25 such series played. Australia have won 10, England has clinched six and the remaining nine have ended in a draw. In terms of retaining the Women’s Ashes, it’s 15-10 in favour of Australia Women.
Till 2010-11, the Women’s Ashes was played in the Test match format only but from that point onward it changed to a multi-format series with wins in each of Tests, ODIs and T20Is counting towards their final tally.
The last time England Women won the Ashes was in 2013-14. Since then there have been five editions of the Women’s Ashes in which Australia have won four and one, the 2023 edition, ended in an 8-8 points draw to allow Australia Women to retain it again.
Recent Form
Australia Women might not be the happiest coming into this series after their semifinal exit from the T20 World Cup but they did well to come back and defeat India 3-0 in the ODIs that followed. They are currently involved in a three-match ODI series against New Zealand Women.
In Tests, Australian women have featured in two games since their last Women’s Ashes Test. They fell to India Women at Wankhede Stadium by eight wickets late last year while crushing South Africa Women by an innings and 284 runs at WACA earlier in 2024.
England Women will be even more disappointed with how things panned out in the Women’s T20 World Cup when they lost to West Indies Women in their final league game of that tournament to crash out in the opening round itself.
They came back to win the three-match T20I series against South Africa Women 3-0, also clinching the ODI series 2-1. Interestingly, like Australia Women, they have also played two Tests since that last Ashes series, both against the same two teams and with the same results – losing to India and defeating South Africa recently.
