What Have The Two Teams Done So Far?
Mumbai Indians, for all their shenanigans leading up to the tournament with the change in their captaincy, run a serious risk of finishing last on the IPL 2024 points table. They have eight points from 13 games and even with a win they might not get to ninth if Punjab end up winning their final game.
Lucknow Super Giants are on 12 points and need a huge win to get themselves in with an outside chance of making it to the playoffs.
Quick MI vs LSG Preview
That Mumbai Indians have really struggled all tournament came to the fore in their previous game against Kolkata Knight Riders when, despite restricting their opponents to what seemed to be a below-par total, they never looked like they were in a hunt to chase it down.
Chasing 158 for a win in 16 overs on an easing surface, the Hardik Pandya-led Mumbai Indians capitulated from 65/0 in the seventh over to 139/8 – scoring a mere 74 runs in the last nine something overs.
A scrappy 24-ball 19 for Rohit Sharma and with Hardik failing yet again, the Mumbai Indians cut a sorry picture.
Speaking of sorry pictures, KL Rahul had done the same when SRH openers Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma banged his bowling attack in a near-170 chase that lasted less than 10 overs.
And while peace seemed to have been made between Rahul and the owners, it did not stop LSG from sliding down further.
They needed to defeat Delhi Capitals to remain in with a chance to make the playoffs but failed to chase down 208.
Despite getting rid of Jake Fraser-McGurk for a duck, their bowling fell away quickly and in reply, once they had slumped to 101/6, any hopes of a successful chase were quickly extinguished. They had suffered their third loss in as many matches.
What LSG now need is for a huge win – probably a 100-run or one with 10 overs to spare – and then hope for SRH to suffer an equally heavy defeat in their last game.
