What Have The Two Teams Done Recently?
England
ODIs haven’t quite been very high on England’s priority list in recent times and that can be seen from the fact that we are in the ninth month of 2024 and they hadn’t played a game before the start of this series!
That’s right, before the start of this series, England’s last ODI came late in 2023 as a part of an ODI series against West Indies. They had lost that 2-1 to the home team, which had been preceded by a horrible performance in the 2023 World Cup in which they had managed to win just four of the nine games they had played.
In the first game here, they managed to scramble to a 300+ score but against an Aussie bowling side which was missing a few of its stars they would have expected to do a lot more. In the end, they lost quite easily.
Australia
While Australia also haven’t played a lot of ODI in recent times, their form in this format has been in sharp contrast to their opponent’s.
They came into this series following a 3-0 series win over West Indies which came in February at home and that had followed their World Cup 2023 victory, in which they had won nine in a row. That made it 12 victories on the trot for Australia coming into this encounter.
A 13th win followed in the first ODI of this series.
Quick England v Australia 2nd ODI Preview
England got a taste of the world champions in the first ODI and it wasn’t too sweet.
At Trent Bridge, as we had predicted in the first game, one expected a lot of runs to be scored and while England made a 300+ total, it was never going to be enough.
What would have bothered the hosts is that they were up against a side that had a bowling line-up consisting of Aaron Hardie, Ben Dwarshuis, Sean Abbott and Adam Zampa, with Matthew Short, Cameron Green, Marnus Labuschagne and Travis Head bowling over 20 overs.
And yet, they managed just 315. This will need to change in this game.
What also needs to change is for England to find a way to get past Travis Head. Head made an unbeaten 154 and in the company of Labuschagne added 148 in less than 18 overs to roll England over.
Jofra Archer did not have a great outing but he can be expected to get better as he gets more overs in. He could well be the bowler to watch out in conditions which might not be as batting-friendly.
