What Have The Two Teams Done Recently?
Australia Women
Overall, Australia Women have a 129-51 win-loss record in this format which gives them the second-best win-loss ratio among Full Member nations in women’s cricket. They also enter this competition on the back of seven successive wins in T20I cricket.
They have won 10 of their last 11 games, giving them a bit of an invincible cloak with their only loss in 2024 having come at the hands of South Africa in Canberra in January.
Sri Lanka Women
They started off as favourites against Pakistan Women in their T20 World Cup opener but a startling collapse saw them fall short of their opponent’s 117 by 31 runs.
Sri Lanka Women might not have the greatest overall win-loss record in their T20I history – they are 58-95 giving them a ratio of 0.60 – but before that opening defeat, they were a team on the rise.
In 2024 itself, Sri Lanka had won 15 of the 19 matches they had played including the Women’s Asia Cup triumph in which they defeated the much-fancied India Women side in the final.
They were on a six-match winning streak before Ireland surprised them in game in Dublin in August in the lead-up to this tournament. A loss to Pakistan here leaves them with a lot to do in their remaining three matches.

Quick Australia vs Sri Lanka Women’s T20 World Cup Preview
The Australian women’s team is so far ahead of the rest of the pack that even the odd loss in a format like T20I becomes breaking news. They have won the most number of titles by some distance – six of them to the next best of one to England and West Indies – and are a juggernaut that’s usually unstoppable.
The Alyssa Healy-led team would be raring to go with the kind of aura that was only matched by their men’s counterparts back in the early 2000s.
While expectations bring a lot of pressure and the inevitable target on their backs, they have been on top for so long that it never seems to affect them.
Up against a side who had come into the tournament, in their captain Chamari Athapaththu’s words, without any pressure of expectations, the Aussie team would be aware of this being a potential banana peel.
However, Sri Lanka themselves have a few things to sort out after their shock loss to Pakistan in their opener.
After winning the Women’s Asia Cup in stunning fashion earlier this year, Sri Lanka would have thought they had an outside chance here of qualifying for the semifinals, but they are now left with a lot to do.
Not only do they need to defeat Australia here, they would have to get past India and New Zealand next and that would be expecting too.
Their over-dependence on Athapaththu looked to have reduced a tad but come a big tournament like this, they would need her to fire. The problem for Sri Lanka is that even with that happening, their opponents have a few more players who could fire even more.
All Eyes On
Sugandika Kumari grabbed a three-fer in the previous game and with this match also to be played during the day, her slow left-arm bowling could play a crucial role in stifling the opposition batters.
For Australia Women, Alyssa Healy took over their captaincy late last year and this is their first big tournament they are playing under her. It would be interesting to see how she juggles her keeping, batting and captaincy duties here.
