What Have The Two Teams Done So Far?
Afghanistan have been around on the ICC tournament scene for a while now, having first played in such an event for the first time when they made their debut in the 2010 T20 World Cup. Incidentally it was in the West Indies itself they had played in their first ICC event.
They lost both their games in the 2010 event and repeated the same showing in 2012 as well before winning their first ever T20 World Cup game in 2014 when they overcame Hong Kong.
In 2016, Afghanistan defeated a Full Member country for the first time, overcoming Zimbabwe in the first round and then shocked the eventual winners West Indies in the second.
Wins over Namibia and Scotland helped them finish fourth in the group stage of the 2021 T20 World Cup while in 2022, they failed to win a single match and ended last in their group.
Uganda are making their T20 World Cup debut having first played in a T20I only in 2019.
While they have played most of their cricket against teams ranked outside the top 20 in the world, Uganda’s 69-19 win-loss record in T20I cricket makes them one of the most successful teams around.
They shocked Zimbabwe in the African Qualifiers to enter this edition of the T20 World Cup.

The Rashid Khan-led Afghanistan will understand the importance of a match like this in which they are expected not just to win but win big.
The reason is that they have West Indies and New Zealand in their group and on pitches where their spinners could come into their own, they will fancy their chances of making the next round.
For that, however, they won’t want any slip-ups against the other two sides, Uganda and Papua New Guinea.
If anything PNG’s performance against West Indies would be a bit of a reminder that teams need to be at their best throughout the 40 overs or run the risk of upset losses on such pitches.

Simon Sseszi is Uganda’s best batsman by some distance, while left-arm spinner Henry Ssenyendo is their second most experienced and picked up 94 wickets in this format – the most by any Uganda bowler.
