What Have The Two Teams Done So Far?
Sri Lanka are one-time T20 World Cup winners having grabbed the trophy in 2014 when they defeated India in the final. Since then, however, they have struggled to get going.
In 2016, they finished fourth in a group of five teams, ahead of only Afghanistan and only on net run-rate. As a result they were forced to feature in the first round of the 2021 edition from which they made the second round and finished on four points from five games and on the fourth spot.
And in the 2022 edition of the tournament, Sri Lanka qualified for the second round again despite losing to Namibia in the first before finishing fourth in a group of six.
South Africa have never won the title, 50-overs or T20 World Cup, and making it worse is they haven’t even made the final before.
In 2022, South Africa had a golden chance to qualify for the semifinals but a stunning defeat at the hands of Netherlands put paid to their chances.

Sri Lanka enter this game knowing its importance as far as qualification for the Super Eight stage is concerned. After all, they have Netherlands, Nepal and archrivals Bangladesh next up and that could prove to be a difficult group for them.
It’s no different for South Africa either you might argue but here’s a side which has had its players who had done well in the 50-overs World Cup last year too.
A few of them went on to feature in the IPL just before the start of this World Cup and came out with flying colours too making them a team to beat in at least this first round of matches.
The trouble for South Africa could be this pitch in New York which might be on the slower side, making it difficult to bat on against the Sri Lankan tweakers.
Sri Lankan captain Wanindu Hasaranga had alluded to this fact and that he hoped for the pitch to play closer to that back home.
Still, a fit-again Kagiso Rabada who has Anrich Nortje, Gerald Coetzee and Marco Jansen with him to exploit the conditions, could prove to be a handful for the inexperienced Sri Lankan batting.
