Latest Update
End of Day Two
If Pakistan managed to pile on 556 in their first innings, England did what the hosts had hoped they wouldn’t – batted the whole day for the loss of a mere two more wickets to end it at 492 for three.
Pakistan are now left with a task to do as Joe Root approaches his double century and Harry Brook is on the verge of a 150. And the way this pitch has behaved and the manner in which England have batted, they could well be on their way to a score of over 700 by tea-time.
As we had said yesterday, Tests in Asia swing drastically on the final day and while a draw is still the favourite result at 4/7 (with 1xbet here), one might be tempted to go with the 13/8 on offer for an England win here.
End of Day Two
Salman Ali Agha joined in the fun to make a century as Pakistan piled on the misery, ending their first innings on 556. In response, England lost the early wicket of Ollie Pope, who had come in to open in place of the injured Ben Duckett but Zak Crawley and Joe Root saw England through to 96 for one by the day’s end.
What this means is a drawn game is now 11/2 (1xbet here) is the lowest odds but we have seen Test pitches crumble easily in Asia and with England batting the way they do, they could get close to the Pakistan score by lunch on day four.
This could allow this Test to become a one innings shootout over the last 150 overs and with the sun baking down and opening the cracks up, a result could be a possibility. Which is a Pakistani win (13/8 with 1xbet here) and an England win (9/2 with 1xbet here) are possibilities one can just not ignore.
End of Day One
Pakistan were bolstered by centuries from Shan Masood and Abdullah Shafique as they ended the first day at 328 for four. 253 of these runs came through one partnership, the second wicket one, between Masood and Shafique.
What that means is that while England took a couple of late wickets, they have fallen a bit behind in the Test played on a dead pitch and unless they can bowl Pakistan out quickly enough they are in a spot of bother.
England have come back from situations like these before which means they are a little too short at 5/1 (1xbet here) to win this. A draw at 13/8 looks like a likely option even though we know things could change dramatically come the fourth innings.
What Have The Two Teams Done Recently?
Pakistan
There has been an obvious struggle for Pakistan in recent times and if one thought they would turn things around in Test match cricket under Shan Masood, they were in for a shock.
Hosting Bangladesh in a two-match Test series, Pakistan went down 0-2 which made it five successive defeats in this format for them.
England
England are coming off a home summer in which they played five Tests against West Indies and Sri Lanka and won 4-1. Before that, they had an away series in India and while they began well with a win in the first Test, they went down 1-4 after that, progressively struggling to get the better of their opponents.
Quick Pakistan vs England 1st Test Preview
The last time a Test was played in Multan was back in 2022 and it was these two very teams who had gone up against each other. England had just gotten seeped into the concept of Bazball and made 281 in 51.4 overs before spinning Pakistan out for 202 in return.
Harry Brook then announced himself with a century in the second innings and while Pakistan put up a fight, they fell 27 runs short of the target of 355 – collapsing from 290/5 to 328 all out.
England have gone places in this format since that 4-1 defeat to India earlier in the year and the loss of 19 points to slower over-rate has left them with a lot to do if they want to make it to the final of the World Test Championship.
On the other hand, Pakistan’s recent failures have all but ruled them out of top two spot but under the Shan Masood-Jason Gillespie combination they have other worries. One, is to play a brand of cricket that’s focussed more on the team than individualistic performances.
Secondly, they need to win the trust of their fans with a brand of cricket that’s exciting and giving them the results.
Tough ask but the good news for Pakistan is their opponents have a stark lack of bowling experience in these conditions. That’s where they might have a slight edge.
