What Have The Two Teams Done Recently?
Pakistan Women
Pakistan enter this year’s Women’s T20 World Cup on the back of a semifinal defeat in the Women’s Asia Cup to Sri Lanka and a 1-2 home loss in a three-match series against South Africa Women.
Overall, Pakistan are 69-98 on win-loss in their career, while in 2024 they have won just four of their 15 T20Is.
Sri Lanka Women
Sri Lanka Women might not have the greatest overall win-loss record in their T20I history – they are 58-94 giving them a ratio of 0.61 – but they are a team on the rise.
In 2024 itself, Sri Lanka have won 15 of the 19 matches they have played including the Women’s Asia Cup triumph in which they defeated the much-fancied India Women side in the final.
They were on a six-match winning streak before Ireland surprised them in game in Dublin in August in the lead-up to this tournament.
Quick Pakistan vs Sri Lanka Women’s T20 World Cup Preview
At one point in the early days of both these teams’ cricketing history, Pakistan were known to be a better team than Sri Lanka. In more recent times, however, things have changed drastically.
Sri Lanka, who were forced to feature in the Qualifiers to make it to this T20 World Cup, followed it up with a performance to remember in the Women’s Asia Cup.
They defeated Bangladesh, Malaysia and Thailand in the first round, got past Pakistan in the semifinal and then stunned India in the final to grab the title.
On the other hand, Pakistan have had a bit of a struggle going for them but it was interesting to see their changed approach in their matches against South Africa Women in the recently concluded home series.
While they lost that 2-1, there was a concerted effort to bat more aggressively at the top of the order.
All Eyes On
It’s hard to put a finger on any player in this Sri Lanka Women line-up other than Chamari Athapaththu. Such has been her dominance that Athapaththu has scored 3326 T20I runs, which is the sixth highest of all time and the best for her team.
Pakistan’s changed approach at the top of the order means that we could see Muneeba Ali go hammer and tongs from the get go. While there might be a good chance she could depart early, if she does get set we could see a dazzler.
Pakistan vs Sri Lanka Head-to-Head Stats
- Overall Pakistan vs Sri Lanka T20I Head-to-head: There have been 20 previous meetings between these two teams with Pakistan Women having a slight edge, winning 10 and losing nine games.
