What is the SA20?
After years of trying to kick-start a proper, franchise-based T20 league in South Africa, CSA was finally able to get the project off the ground with the SA20. This was kick-started in 2023 with its first edition that was held in January and February.
Six South African teams participated in the first edition of the SA20 with the format of the competition not too different from most other popular T20 leagues around the world.
All six teams played in a round-robin format on a home and away basis resulting in 10 matches for each of those sides. At the end of this round-robin league, the sides finishing in the top four of the points table made it to the playoffs.
While in the first edition of the tournament, the playoffs essentially constituted two semifinals and a final, this can be expected to change in the second season.
SA20 Teams
As mentioned earlier, there are six sides which make up the SA20. The same six which featured in the first season of this tournament will also take part in the second season.
The SA20 teams this season are:
- Pretoria Capitals (owned by JSW Group)
- Joburg Super Kings (owned by Chennai Super Kings)
- Sunrisers Eastern Cape (owned by SUN Group)
- Paarl Royals (owned by Manoj Badale)
- Durban’s Super Giants (owned by RPSG Group)
- MI Cape Town (owned by Reliance Industries)
Previous SA20 Winners
- 2024: Sunrisers Eastern Cape
- 2023: Sunrisers Eastern Cape
What Happened in the 2024 SA20?
Sunrisers Eastern Cape made it two titles in a row when they crushed Durban’s Super Giants in the final by a whopping margin of 89 runs.
In a one-sided title decider, the Sunrisers piled up 204 for three from their 20 overs thanks to a 30-ball 56 from Tristan Stubbs and solid efforts from everyone else with the bat.
Durban’s response was a measly 115 from 17 overs as Marco Jansen bagged a five-fer in return.
Earlier, the Eastern Cape had defeated Durban in the first Qualifier by an equally one-sided margin of 51 runs to make the final. Durban then overcame Joburg Super Kings, who had earlier eased past Paarl Royals in the Eliminator, to set up a repeat match with Sunrisers Eastern Cape.
What Happened in the 2023 SA20?
The previous edition of the SA20, which was the first ever to be played, was held between January 10 and February 12, 2023. Sunrisers Eastern Cape defeated Pretoria Capitals in the final by four wickets to lift the trophy.
Opting to field first, Eastern Cape restricted the Capitals to 135 all out after Roelof van der Merwe picked up four wickets in his spell. The Sunrisers did lose six wickets in response but Adam Rossington’s 30-ball 57 ensured they needed just 16.2 overs to finish off the match.
This was after Pretoria Capitals had defeated Paarl Royals by 29 runs in the first semi-final while Eastern Cape edged past Joburg Super Kings by 14 runs in the second.
Durban’s Super Giants and MI Cape Town crashed out of the tournament in the league stages itself but the Super Giants were slightly unlucky not to make it to the knockouts.
That’s because Eastern Cape, Paarl and Durban, all ended with 19 points on the points but despite Durban winning their last league game by 151 runs and the Royals losing their last one by 59 runs, it was the latter team that made it through to the semifinals by a difference of 0.02 on the net run-rate.
