Some of the top West Indian players will take part in the 2024 Indian Premier League. A few of those were selected through the IPL auction that was held in December 2023 while some others made it to the tournament as retentions from the previous season.
Here’s the list of all the West Indian players who will participate in the 2024 IPL.
Player Name | Team Name |
---|---|
Shai Hope | Delhi Capitals |
Sunil Narine | Kolkata Knight Riders |
Sherfane Rutherford | Kolkata Knight Riders |
Andre Russell | Kolkata Knight Riders |
Nicholas Pooran | Lucknow Super Giants |
Kyle Mayers | Lucknow Super Giants |
Romario Shepherd | Mumbai Indians |
Shimron Hetmyer | Rajasthan Royals |
Rovman Powell | Rajasthan Royals |
Alzarri Joseph | Royal Challengers Bangalore |
30-year-old Shai Hope will be a part of the Delhi Capitals side and if he can hit his straps early, he might make the playing XI regularly. Especially if Rishabh Pant is unable to keep wickets as he returns to competitive cricket for the first time.
Sunil Narine and Andre Russell continue to remain a part of the Kolkata Knight Riders set-up after being retained by them and could form a very strong middle to lower-order core. That, along with their, bowling capabilities should help the Knight Riders no end.
Sherfane Rutherford is another player from the region who was picked up by the Knight Riders at his base price of INR 1.5 crore. While it remains to be seen if he can get a lot of chances, he is a superb back-up batting option.
Lucknow Super Giants retained hard-hitting keeper-batter Nicholas Pooran in their set-up and given his most recent form, we can expect him to be a part of the lineup to begin with. Also joining him at the Super Giants is Kyle Mayers, who was also not let go by the Super Giants.
A left-handed opener, Mayers can also bowl a bit of medium-pace, having picked up a stunning 34 wickets in Test match cricket at 18.29.
The one West Indian player that Lucknow traded to Mumbai Indians is Romario Shepherd. Shepherd is a solid bowling all-rounder who can tonk the ball at a strike rate of 150+ and pick up wickets when needed.
Shimron Hetmyer might have been dropped from the recent West Indian squad for a loss of his form but come the IPL, he can be expected to deliver the goods for Rajasthan Royals. The Royals also picked up Rovman Powell for a whopping sum of INR 7.4 crore at the 2024 IPL Auctions and that could be a matter of huge pressure on the West Indian.
Royal Challengers Bangalore needed someone to bolster their bowling attack and they looked to have done that by bringing in Alzarri Joseph in their line-up. Joseph’s 6/12 in the 2019 IPL is still the best-ever bowling figure in IPL history.
